Organizing Thought of the Day |
What's Lurking in Your Fridge?
 |
Two weeks from now, it will be National Clean-Out Your Refrigerator Day, officially on November 15th. That being said, I like giving this task a full two weeks. In doing so, we can tackle this project in mini-goals. Here is a task for each day, starting today and up through mid-November.
Oct 31. What's lurking in your refrigerator? Since today is Halloween, it's the perfect day to find out what's lurking in your fridge...and to get rid of those monsters. Get rid of anything moldy, smelly, expired, or downright scary to consume. While you're at it, get rid of anything (even if it's still safe to consume) that you and family members have not eaten, and will not eat.
Don't take up space in the fridge with foods and beverages that are just going to sit there for another 6 months unused. Even if it's a full bottle of salad dressing, that you only used once and discovered you didn't care for, get rid of it. Why keep it if you, and your family members, are not going to eat it?
Nov 1. Zone in on the FIRST shelf. Choose any shelf in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that shelf. Return items to that shelf.
Nov 2. Zone in on the SECOND shelf. Choose any shelf in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that shelf. Return items to that shelf.
Nov 3. Zone in on a THIRD shelf. Choose any shelf in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that shelf. Return items to that shelf.
Nov 4. Zone in on a FOURTH shelf. Choose any shelf in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that shelf. Return items to that shelf.
Nov 5. Zone in on any other shelves and the door. Empty, clean and disinfect any remaining shelves...as well as the fridge door.
Nov 6. Zone in ONE fridge drawer. Choose one pull-out drawer in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that drawer. Return items inside.
Nov 7. Zone in the SECOND fridge drawer. Choose another pull-out drawer in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that drawer. Return items inside.
Nov 8. Zone in the THIRD, etc. fridge drawer. Choose pull-out the third drawer, and other any drawers, in your refrigerator and empty it completely. Then clean and disinfect that drawer. Return items inside.
Nov 9. Come up with an organized plan.
Determine what's going to go on what shelves so that items inside your fridge are stored in the most convenient manner.
In my fridge, beverages are on the top shelf (milk, iced tea, etc.), as well as items like parmesan cheese, sour cream, ricotta cheese, and such.
The second shelf down is for unprepared foods waiting to be cooked, including eggs.
The third shelf is used for fruit and yogurt.
The fourth shelf is exclusively for leftovers. There is a bit of cross-over occasionally, but only when really necessary.
The deli drawer is for deli meats, bacon, and tortilla shells. The two drawers are for fresh vegetables.
The door is for condiments...sweet items (jams, whipped topping) on the top, savory items/condiments (mustard, bbq sauce, soy sauce, mayonnaise) on the next door shelf, tall bottles (wine) on the next door shelf, and we use the bottom shelf for chocolate...which we like to eat cold. Come up with your own organized (written) plan.
Nov 10. Reorganize fridge items to match your plan. By the time you're done, you should have specific categories for each shelf, door shelf, and drawer.
While you're at it, consider purchasing any fridge organizers that may help you keep the fridge organized. Once you get them, take a few moments to put them to use.
Nov 11. Clear off the surface and clean. Remove everything from the outside of your fridge door. Clean it well. Return only the items that you really would like to have on that surface.
Nov 12. Dust off the top. What's on top of your fridge? Declutter that area and be sure you clean it off well.
Nov 13. What's lurking in your freezer. Say goodbye to anything that has freezer-burn, can't be identified, or that your family will not eat.
Nov 14. Come up with a plan and reorganize. Designate areas of your freezer and organize everything back inside.
Nov 15. Celebrate National Clean Out Your Fridge Day. If you did all of the above, today is a free day for you to simply be happy for your accomplishments.
Remember, if you tackle just a small part of your fridge every day, it will always be neat, clean, and organized.
P.S. By the way, Christmas is just around the corner. Make sure it's an joyous, organized one. My Christmas Holiday Planner can help you make this holiday season your most organized yet!
