Organizing Greeting Cards Received

A GON Reader Asked:

Hello Maria,

Our children have given us lots of cards all these years: Birthday cards, Christmas cards, Father's Day cards, Mother's Day cards, etc. My husband would like to keep all of them. How can I organize them? I have them in boxes.

Also, how do I organize our photos? What is the best suggestion you have? Thank you so much for your ideas,

--Teresa

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Teresa,

Thanks for your questions. I suggest you keep those greeting cards from your kids in card organizer boxes, divided by occasion, such as Anniversary, Birthday, Easter, Mother's Day, etc. These hold 140-plus cards, and keep them sorted for easy reminiscing.

I'm assuming you're talking about 'printed photos.' (If you meant digital photos, reply and let me know.') If you have tons, I'd first begin by sorting them into large categories...like decades...and then sorting each of those piles into smaller categories... vacations, holidays, school, etc. Try to do this on a large table (perhaps a portable one that you temporarily set up in your home) that you don't have to use for anything else...so you can do this a little bit at a time over a period of days or a few weeks.

Once they're sorted, you can then insert into photo albums for the easiest viewing when you're feeling nostalgic. Alternately, you can organize them into photo boxes, which is quicker. A third possibility is scanning them so you can view them digitally...and this possibility gives you a back-up of your photos and allows you to easily share them online with others.

Hope this helps,

  Take Action

___ 1. Do today's task on my November Monthly Organizing Checklist. The November 4 TO DO focuses on your dining supply of tablecloths, cloth napkins, etc. Visit GetOrganizedNow.com to access my November Monthly Organizing Checklist.

___ 2. Organize some memories. If you have greeting cards, photos, special letters or other memories you're saving, organize them in a way that you can enjoy them. For instance, dedicate a pretty box for greeting cards you wish to save...organize them by occasion or person. Store photos in a photo box or album, sorted by year. Don't just keep these items tucked away. Schedule dates on your calendar to have a cup of tea and enjoy your memories.

___ 3. Stop stress before it happens. To ensure that hosting guests for the holidays doesn't become stressful, I'm a big believer in doing this. Visit: GetOrganizedNow.com to access my Dirty Little Secret on this topic.

'A letter is never ill-timed; it never interrupts. Instead it waits for us to find the opportune minute, the quiet moment to savor the message. There is an element of timelessness about letter writing.' (Lois Wyse)
