  Organizing Thought of the Day

The Lost Permission Slip

I read a little snippet in Reader's Digest awhile ago that I thought you'd enjoy. Here goes...

There was a woman who was having an awfully difficult time getting her kids off to school in the morning. First of all, she couldn't find anything quickly in her house, especially papers she needed. Secondly, she always felt rushed in the morning.

Anyhow, one morning she was searching for her child's permission slip, which her child had to bring to school that day in order to go on a field trip. After searching for the permission slip, she gave up and decided to write a note to the teacher, explaining that she'd lost the form, but that it was all right for her child to go on the trip.

Later that day, the child's teacher called to let this woman know that the note she had sent was--scribbled on the back of the lost permission slip!

That story gave me a chuckle, but also perfectly described two very common problems.

1) Not having an effective place to put papers, especially those that need action.

When I have papers that require action, I either take care of those actions right away, if they are quick...or I schedule a day/time to take that action. That paper then gets placed in a RED Action folder... which is always in the same exact spot on my desk at home. Papers that go into this folder are actions I'm taking within a day or two...and I always know exactly where to find them.

In the case of a school permission slip, a test that needs to be signed, etc. that is an action that takes a minute or two to handle. Do the action. Get the paper back into your child's backpack. The action is now complete and the paper won't have a chance of getting lost.

2) Not managing time well and feeling rushed.

Feeling rushed is almost always due to not starting early enough. If you need to be somewhere or do something at a certain time, start early, padding your time generously.

Getting kids off to school on time, especially young kids, can sometimes be challenging. Be sure they're not getting distracted. When my child was young, TV and video games were not allowed before school, for example. Also, helping kids to do what they can the night before helps a lot...such as laying out whatever clothes they're going to wear and assisting them with getting their back packs packed, so they can just grab and go in the morning.
