Fabulous Organizing Tips and Thoughts
from GON Readers

Here are a bunch of tips and thoughts from GON Readers to brighten your day...

Organizing Kids Clothing

I shop for kids clothing everywhere I go--garage sales, resale shops, etc. In my basement I have 6 large Rubbermaid totes labeled with sizes and seasons (i.e. 6-8 fall/winter). Since I only have boys, it is easy to keep track. When I purchase a new used piece of clothing, I wash the item and then put it in the appropriate bin until they grow into it. This works equally well for hand-me- downs. I have one bin reserved for winter coats and snowpants and one for shoes/boots.

It takes a little time, but twice a year when the seasons change, I do a thorough 'sort' and cast out anything that won't fit anyone, is stained, or out of style.

Plus, my kids know if they ever have a friend spend the night and he forgets any item of clothing, mom has it downstairs!

Keeping Paper Clutter at Bay
Like most other moms out there, my days are filled to overflowing with all the things we need to accomplish, and we are ever on the search to find that shortcut to help us out. I've signed up for several email newsletters to help me find that recipe that takes less than eternity to make or that one-in-a-million craft project for the kids' classrooms.

Instead of automatically downloading and printing each newsletter, I set time aside each week to scan through them and if something strikes my fancy I ask myself what is the likelihood I'll actually use that article/recipe/etc. Actually, what I ask myself is whether I like it enough to handwrite it out.

It has become so easy to print everything out that I became overrun with papers and lost track of what was what. So I started handwriting those things I liked.

It has not only ensured I'll get things I will use and enjoy (the kids love some of the recipes), but also that I don't have mountains of paper to keep track of and to shuffle from here and there.

Before You Toss Expired Coupons
I collect a ton of grocery store coupons and use them often. But sometimes a bunch expire before I have the opportunity to use them. But did you know that military families overseas can use coupons up to six months after they expire?

On the last day of every month, I grab all of my unused, expired coupons, separate them into categories (food, non-food, baby, pet), and mail them to:

Support Our Troops
P.O. Box 70
Daytona Beach, FL 32115-0070

This organization then distributes them to various bases overseas and at home based on information they have regarding the needs of the communities they're serving.

Please be sure to sort them before you send them, because the organization nor the military has the extra manpower to do it.

In doing so, I'm keeping coupon clutter at bay...and supporting troops at the same time!
