Have a Project? Make a Project Binder
|
Most people end up with a big project on their hands now and then. Maybe you're
in the process of moving, changing jobs, researching landscaping ideas,
deciding on a college, or have a large event you're hosting. One tool that is
always helpful with big projects is a project binder. To make one, you will
need:
1. one 2-inch, D-ring, 3-ring binder
2. plastic, 3-hole punched pocket folders
3. removable labels
4. a Sharpie
5. a 3-hole punch tool
Begin sorting your papers into categories. For instance, if you're building
a new home, you'll likely have categories like:
Bank Info
Builder Info
Exterior Specs
Interior Specs
Utilities
Landscaping
etc.
Using your labels and Sharpie, label a
pocket folder with each category and
insert those pocket folders into your binder.
3-hole punch your papers and insert them BEHIND the pocket folder for the
corresponding category. Insert smaller papers, or papers that cannot be
3-hole punched, into the pocket folder itself.
When the project is complete, if you need to keep the papers in your binder
for reference, you can actually make file folders for each category and store
these papers in your home or work filing system, without the bulk of the
binder. If you don't need the papers after the project is complete, recycle
them. Either way, reuse the binder and the pocket folders for another project.
Putting together a project binder is the same for any project you're working
on...except your categories will be different, of course.
By the way, I like using
removable labels because a) they allow
you to easily change a category name if you need to and b) when the project is
done, all the labels could be removed and the folders can be used for a
completely different project. I like using a Sharpie for writing on the labels
because anything written with a Sharpie is bold and easy to see.
Whenever you have a project you're working on, make yourself a Project Binder,
applying the techniques I've described above. It will make your life a whole
lot easier, time will be saved, costly errors will be reduced or eliminated,
you won't feel stressed, and you'll be able to find everything you need when
you need it.
