Organizing Thought of the Day

Coins: Do You Have a Place, and a Use, for Them?
|
Do you remember, as a child, collecting coins in a piggy bank or mason jar? I
remember being so excited when it was full. My sister and I would pour all of
our coins on a table (protected by newspaper or a tablecloth, of course) and
then roll them in coin wrappers, bring them to the bank, and cash them in. Then
we'd buy something fun. I had a paper route as a child, by the way, so I always
was able to collect lots of coins in tip money!
As a teenager, I used coins regularly for purchases, mostly for in-store video
games. As a young adult, I would use coins for tolls and parking meters. The
cup holder in my car was always a coin receptacle.
These days, as you know, most anything we're purchasing (including parking and
tolls) is paid via plastic payment methods (debit or credit cards.) I always
have $20 in cash, and some change, in my wallet, just in case, but I rarely use
cash for anything anymore. Some folks still do, when they actually can, but
most use their plastic.
Still, every now and then I receive coins, mostly when I'm paying a business or
organization that does not accept plastic. When I get coins, once I'm home I
put them in a piggy bank...it's a digital one that keeps track of how much
money is inside. A full piggy bank, in my case with the size of my piggy bank,
is about $100, and we always use that money towards a special dinner or
something else fun.
Rather than having coins in junk drawers, or otherwise scattered out and about,
collect and consolidate change in a piggy bank, a mason jar, or a mug. Either
cash it in at the bank when it's full, use it to pay for small purchases,
like a newspaper or a coffee, or use it when you make donations. Right about
now, a Salvation Army bell ringer is likely right in your area!
Before you start wrapping coins in coin wrappers,
be sure to check with your bank (or wherever you're planning to cash them in)
and ask whether they prefer you bring them in wrapped in coin wrappers, or
loose (in a bag). Some gas stations, grocery stores, and big box stores will
exchange coins for cash. You may also choose to use a kiosk (like Coinstar) in
which you can dump large amounts of coins and the machine takes care of the
rest. That being said, you may have to pay a fee for this service, depending on
whether you take the cash or you exchange your coins for an eCard.
By the way, you might find some coins under the sofa cushions or in jacket
pockets, so check both.
I love progress and forward thinking, but I do miss the days when my sister and
I would sit at the table rolling coins. I hope you have memories of time gone
by that bring you moments of peace and joy this holiday season...and always.

pocket, and say out loud 'Thank you, God, for this symbol of abundance that
keeps flowing into my life.' Never once have I asked, 'Why only a penny, God?
You know I need a lot more than that.' (Wayne Dyer)
