Ask Maria:
Candles and Smoke Marks on the Walls

A GON Reader Asked:

I would love to have candles for ambience, but my husband thinks they make smoke marks on the walls. Do you know if they do? Or if some types are better than others? Thank you,

--Sara

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Sara,

I enjoy burning candles now and then, but yes, regular candles will leave soot on the walls, and it will be especially noticeable if you burn your candles close to a wall. Here's how to keep soot to a minimum:

1. Trim the wick: Before burning any candle, be sure the wick is trimmed. It should be no longer than 1/4 inch.

2. Check the candle when it's burning. If a mushroom shape appears on the wick, extinguish the candle, trim the wick, and then re-light.

3. Don't burn the candle too close to a wall. I made the mistake of doing this in my bathroom once...it was just a few inches away...and I had soot to clean afterwards. Keep it at least a foot away from any wall. By the way, I used a Magic Eraser to remove the soot marks.

4. Don't 'blow' the candle out. Either use a candle snuffer or put the lid back on the jar.

5. Don't burn the candle in a drafty room. The flame should be as still as possible.

If you're looking for a cleaner-burning candle, soy candles are a good choice.

Finally, there are tons of battery operated candles on the market these days that provide the ambiance you may be hoping for, without any worries about soot.

Hope this helps.
