Ask Maria:
I need a routine to keep my car clean and uncluttered
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Ciao Maria,
I have a nice new car and I need a routine to keep it clean and uncluttered.
I have two kids and we often spend time outside, so it's easy for the car to
get dirty with mud and so on.
Please something simple. Tiny baby steps, but effective.
Thanks so much.

Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Francesca,
I'm so happy for you. It always feels wonderful to be driving a brand new car.
I hope you enjoy it and always stay safe on the roads. Here are seven easy
tasks I do to keep my car clean and uncluttered:
1) Keep rubber mats in your car. Honestly, this helps so much. When it's
snowy or muddy, put your nice carpeted mats in the trunk (or leave them at home
in the garage) and use the rubber mats
instead. These can be easily cleaned. It's much harder to keep carpeted mats
clean.
2) Don't eat in the car. I know...this is tough when you have kids. But
if you have the option to eat 'inside' your home or the restaurant, you'll
avoid spills and such. If you absolutely must eat inside the car, be sure you
keep a supply of trash bags in the vehicle so you can collect empty cups,
wrappers, etc. Avoid sticky foods in the car at all costs (lollipops, gum and
such.)
3) Institute a 'water only' rule when in the car. If water spills, it
won't stain. Coffee, soda, etc. will. Besides, water is going to be the
healthiest choice.
4) Get rid of trash quickly. Whenever you have trash in the car, make a
point to get rid of it. There's usually a trash can in gas stations, in front
of stores, etc. Whatever you do, don't leave any trash in the car overnight.
5) Get the car washed often. I recommend once a week, or every two weeks
at minimum. This will help keep your exterior of the car looking great. If you
live in a cold weather area, you don't want to allow salt and other debris to
remain stuck to your car for long periods of time...it will begin damaging the
paint.
6) Keep kid toys and books corralled. It's very easy for families with
kids to have cars cluttered with toys, books and more. Give each child one
fabric cube. They can fill their personal cube, but that's the limit when it
comes to toys in the car.
7) Dust and vacuum. Just like your home needs dusting and vacuuming, so
does your car. Keep a car duster in your vehicle and dust it when you fuel up
or when you're waiting to pick up your child at school. Vacuum it out on the
weekend, every two weeks minimum. When you vacuum, remove the mats to be sure
you're getting all of the debris.
