Ask Maria:
Help for a Book Hoarder
|
A GON Reader Asked:
I have somehow became a book hoarder, I feel guilty getting rid of books I
haven't read or will never read. How do I solve this? You always have such good
advice. Thank you!
--Nancy Austin
Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your question. I'm happy to offer some advice and perspective.
1. Give yourself a 'book store rule.' If you're going to go into a book
store, chances are, you're going to be enticed to buy a book, or two, or three.
Here's a rule you can give yourself. For every new book you purchase, you have
to donate two. In doing this, you'll actually have less books any time you shop
at a book store.
2. Use your local library. With this option, you'll not only save money, but
you have to return the books by their due date...whether you've read them by
that date or not.
3. Set specific reading goals: Make a list of the books you'll be
reading, in the order you'll be reading them. Set a 'daily' reading time and
read during this time, preferably around 30 minutes. Don't allow anything but
an emergency (and most things are not emergencies) to take precedence over your
reading time. In doing this, you'll get through the books that you haven't
read...that you want to read.
4. Give someone else a chance to read what you're not reading. Books
you'll never read are taking up unnecessary space in your home. If they're new,
wrap them and give as gifts to people in your life who you know love to read.
Alternately, donate (or sell) them to a used book store or thrift store. Rather
than feeling guilty about getting rid of books you don't read, make a paradigm
switch. Feel guilty, instead, about holding books back that others would love
to read if only they had access to those books.
Hope this helps a bit!
