Organizing Thought of the Day

Get Organized with Your Sleep Routine
|
On New Year's Day, I woke up at 8:30 a.m. This is a very late start for me as I
usually have a 6:15 a.m. start most other days. Although we didn't go out for
New Year's Eve, our family did celebrate at home and we all stayed up well past
midnight to ring in the new year.
Knowing that I would be tired and groggy if I woke up at 'normal time,' I
decided to catch another few hours of rest. Because I did, I woke up feeling
energized and ready to take on the day. It wasn't a 'work day' for me. I always
'take off' on New Year's Day. However, after I had some breakfast and coffee, I
headed to my scrapbooking area and worked on a bunch of fun projects that I
wanted to get done.
I've heard so many folks brag that they can 'get by' on as little as four hours
a sleep a night. Yes, sleep requirements can vary 'a bit' from one person to
another, but the majority of healthy adults need seven to eight hours of shut
eye to feel rested, stay healthy, remain focused, and be productive the next
day.
Constant sleep deprivation can be detrimental on our bodies over time, putting
us at risk for memory issues, trouble concentrating, mood changes, weakened
immunity, accidents, high blood pressure, poor balance, and a host of health
issues, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
A few rules of thumb:
1) Try to get the same amount of sleep every night
2) Try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night
3) Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day of the week, even on
weekends. Every time you switch up your sleep and wake time, you're disrupting
your body's clock, and it becomes challenging to feel rested and productive.
4) If you do deviate from your normal routine, like a very late bed time, don't
feel guilty taking the time to rest a bit longer than usual in the morning.
Alternately, take a nap or two during the day if needed. I find that occasional
20-minute naps can work wonders on days when I've strayed from my normal
sleep-wake routine.
Now, I'm not recommending you 'sleep in' or 'sleep way over the seven hours you
need' on most days. Doing either of these isn't healthy either. Too much sleep
is also linked to diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression, headaches and
more.
Getting organized with your sleep routine will help you be more organized
overall. Before you go to sleep tonight, work out a bed time that's going to
result in you getting sufficient sleep (around 7-8 hours), so you can start
tomorrow on a well-rested note.
