  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
How do I organize cut-out paper from newspapers and magazines?

A GON Reader Asked:

Hi Maria, I love your newsletters! One question I do have for you. How do I organize little pieces of paper that I cut out of a magazine or newspaper that has an e-mail address, or something to do, or a place to go, or anything like that? I have so many of them and can't figure out the best way to organize them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much,

--Kamal

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Kamal,

Thanks so much for your note and for being a loyal reader! I have two suggestions for you. But first and foremost, and you probably already know this, having loose scraps of papers is never a good idea when it comes to getting and staying organized. Tiny scraps get lost so easily. So, the idea is NOT to have any 'loose' little pieces of paper. Also, and this probably goes without saying, don't keep scraps of paper you don't need. Recycle them. Ok, here goes:

1) If the information is something simple like an email address, a place to go, a book to read, etc., instead of cutting out scraps of paper, just transfer (re-write) that information and store it in one, categorized (by topic) reference binder. You can make one of these yourself or simply use my pre-made Easy Organizer. In doing this, you won't have to constantly be cutting out tiny bits of information.

2. If the information is more involved, like a comic strip, a recipe, a list of instructions, or any information that's too much of a pain to rewrite or recreate, cut that information out, scotch tape it to a regular 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper, and insert that paper into a page protector. Taping it onto a sheet of paper will help you avoid having that smaller sheet of paper slipping and shifting position in the page protector. (Note: That being said, if whatever you have is printed on both sides of that scrap of paper (like a recipe), taping it won't work. In this case, just insert it into the sheet protector so you can view the front and back.) All page protectors can then be stored in a categorized binder...your own or my Easy Organizer.

Hope this helps!
