Organizing Thought of the Day

Keeping Up and Staying Organized with the Laundry
|
Do you dream of the day when your volume of laundry will be under control and
your laundry room will be organized? If so, I'd like to offer these five tips
that help me and my family tremendously.
1) A load a day keeps the laundry away. In my house, it's only my
husband, my daughter, and me. But we still generate enough laundry to run at
least one washer and one dryer cycle each day. To keep up, I do a cycle of
laundry daily. This may seem like a lot but, in reality, the machines do most
of the work. There's not that much hands-on time.
2) Sort ahead of time. We have one
laundry sorter, and it's kept in the
laundry room. When any family member removes his or her dirty clothes, that
person is responsible for taking those clothes to the laundry room, checking
pockets for tissues or change, checking for stains and pre-treating those, and
putting them in the correct bag in our laundry sorter. When it's time to wash,
everything is ready to be tossed in the washer.
3) Prevent wrinkling. As soon as the dryer cycle is done, remove the
clothing before wrinkles have a chance to set in.
4) You don't have to fold everything. Only fold clothing that needs to
be folded. For clothing that needs to be hung up, just grab that clothing,
walk to the closet where it belongs, and hang it up.
5) Keep your laundry supplies together. I keep my soap, stain remover,
dryer sheets, etc. on a shelf in my laundry room, right near the machines. In
addition, we have a small tissue box nearby, exclusively for catching dryer
lint (I empty it when it's full.) Make it easy on yourself by making things as
convenient as possible.
Finally, I strongly urge you to never do laundry when it can't be checked on. A
washing machine can break and you may end up with water everywhere. Trust me,
it has happened to me in the past. I was home awhile ago doing laundry and the
hose broke. Even though I noticed the water all over our floor within about
five minutes or so, in those few minutes it was coming out of our ceiling in
the basement below. Thank goodness I was home so it wasn't even worse. Dryers
left unattended is a fire hazard. Only do laundry when you're home, and
check on it now and then to be sure everything is running properly.
Finally, do what you can to
make your laundry room more inviting,
so you're more encouraged to keep up.
