  Organizing Thought of the Day

Be Organized When Looking for Something Online

The other day, we received a letter from the social security department that was pretty cryptic. Both my husband and I were more than puzzled as to what it meant. So, after dinner, I hopped on the Internet, did some searching on Google, and found the answer to our question in about 4 minutes. It was time well-spent. The Internet contains a wealth of information, but it can also be a huge time-waster if we allow it to be. Here's how I stay organized when looking for something online.

1) Schedule an appropriate time to search. I do my best to avoid just popping onto the Internet randomly throughout the day, because doing so can soak up precious time and is a distraction from my other TO DOs. When I have to look up something, and I don't need an immediate answer (which is the case most of the time), I jot down a few words in a notebook to remind me of what I have to look up. I then have a designated hour each day for doing so. When that time rolls around, I get any searches, or anything else computer-related done. I call it my 'Internet Hour.'

2) Be sure to stay on track. If you originally set out to search for some specific information, but find you're easily distracted by other interesting sites that you see, then you need to use a tool to remind you what your original goals were. Set a timer to go off every 15 minutes. If you're still on track with your original goals, great. If not, bookmark the web site you're on for future viewing, and then go back to your original goals.

3) Learn search engine specifics. You can find what you're looking for much faster on the search engines if you know the best keywords and keyword phrases to type in. Something I like using is Google's Advanced Search.

4) Organize your bookmarks/favorites. Bookmarks and favorites allow you to easily return to a page you liked, without you having to remember the web address. Most web browsers have a bookmark or favorites option. Set up categorized folders, such as Recipes, Inspiration, or Cool Tools.

P.S. Tired of clutter? It comes in all forms...physical, digital, paper, and emotional. This can help you say Goodbye Clutter starting today!
