5 Easy Organizing Shortcuts
|
Life is short, right? So, why not take a few shortcuts? These five shortcuts
are a great way for you to begin getting organized quickly and effectively.
1) Reduce your volume of stuff. The less stuff you have...the less you
have to store, the less you have to sift through, the less you have to
rearrange, the less space you have to make room for, and the less decisions you
have to make.
Reduce the volume of your possessions.
It's the very best shortcut to organized living.
2) Call before you go. The other day, my dad called and said, I wonder
if Kohl's has a bath rug in the size I need. I may take a drive over. I said,
'Call them before you leave and ask.' He did and discovered they didn't have
what he needed in stock. He saved time by not having to drive there to find out
and ended up ordering it online instead. Here's another example. I always call
my hair dresser to find out if she's running 'on time' or not. Sometimes she
is, but on days when she's 15 minutes behind, I can often run an errand before
my appointment. A short cut to saving time is calling ahead.
3) Do two things at once. While some activities call for very focused
time, like working on an important report for work, other tasks can be done
simultaneously. An example would be walking your dog. In doing so, you're
helping your pet and exercising at the same time. Another example would be
tidying up your desk while you're on telephone hold.
4) Follow a routine. While I'm certainly not suggesting that you should
never do anything spontaneous (because you should now and then), having a
routine that you follow most days is your best 'shortcut' to getting things
done. In having a routine, you won't have to waste time wondering what has to
be done or what comes next. Set routines when it comes to getting ready in the
morning, handling home chores and work projects, getting paperwork done,
connecting with your family and friends, etc.
5) Take a few shortcuts when you're expecting guests. Instead of
fretting over how you're going to get the entire house cleaned up before your
guests arrive, concentrate on those areas that really make a difference. This
will be the main area where you're going to be sitting, the guest bathroom, and
the guest bedroom (only if they're staying overnight.) Remove any clutter piles
that are sure to make your house look messy--put them in a closet or your
basement until your guests are gone. Wipe smudges from mirrors and faucets in
the guest bathroom. Turn the main room lights down a bit so any dust goes
unnoticed. If guests are sleeping over, be sure they have clean sheets on their
bed and fresh towels in the bathroom.
