Organizing Thought of the Day
|
Ask Maria:
How do I prioritize my craft projects and donate/sell excess supplies?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Hi Maria,
I have accumulated a lot of craft and sewing supplies. I am doubting the idea
that I will get to all of these future projects.
Please advise on:
1. how to decide which projects to pursue and prioritize
2. how/where to sell (or donate) excess supplies
Thank you for your help!
Best regards,
--Monica
Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Monica,
As a fellow crafter, here's what I do...and what I recommend:
1. Get those projects written down. Grab a set of index cards. On each
one, write a few words describing the 'known' craft projects you may like to
do. When you're done, lay them all out on a large table. When you have them all
in front of you, choose the next half dozen (or so) projects you're going to
work on.
2. Shuffle those 6
index cards in the order you'd like
to do them. Some are going to be timely, like if you're trying to make a quilt
for someone's baby that's due in two months. Others aren't going to be so
important...like maybe something decorative you kinda-sorta-maybe want to
display in your home office.
3. Put these cards in priority order on a cork board so they're promptly
displayed.
4. Rubber band those other index cards together and put them in a
'future craft possibilities' folder.
5. Gather the supplies you need for each of those projects, and make a
'project box' or 'project tote' for each of those.
6. Donate other supplies. For supplies that are not going to be used for
your half dozen priority projects, these are all candidates to be donated. Here
are some donation drop-off possibilities (be sure you contact each of them
first.)
a) friends and family who are crafters or who have young children (Any time I
plan to donate craft supplies, the first thing I do is post a message on my
personal Facebook page with a photo of the item(s). It is almost always picked
up the next day. I usually just give it away or sell it for a nominal fee.)
b) schools (preschools, elementary schools, art teachers)
c) daycare centers
d) youth centers and/or nurseries (church or community)
e) Boy Scout or Girl Scout troops
f) senior centers
g) assisted living centers and/or nursing homes
Hope this helps!
