  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
Do you know who would appreciate boxes of old recipe books?

A GON Reader Asked:

Hello Maria, I have just signed up for your newsletter. Decluttering is on my agenda now and I will need all the help and suggestions I can get.

My first question: I have 5 boxes of recipe books. I've gone through these recipe books, and really, I don't know who would appreciate them. Shredding is NOT an option. Any suggestions?

--Deanne K

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Deanne,

I'm so glad you asked. If those recipe books aren't serving you, they could be serving someone else. First, do you mean cookbooks, like professionally published cookbooks? Or do you mean recipes that you've collected over the years from various organizations, like a local church recipe book or a book of recipes from a great aunt?

If they are published cookbooks, here are a bunch of possibilities:

1 Donate them: Call your local library, thrift store, high school, church, senior center, etc. and find out if they'd like them. They might want them on their library shelves, they may want to use them to make crafts, or they may even wish to sell them.

2. Give them away: Post photos of your cookbooks on your personal Facebook page. Let your local friends know that you'll put them out on your doorstep for pick-up at their convenience.

3. Leave at your curb: On the next beautiful, sunny day, put them in a box at your curb marked FREE in BIG letters. They may get scooped up! I know that when folks in my area do this with books, furniture and more, those items are not out there for long before they're taken.

4. Sell them. This is not easy with older books unless they're a collector's item, but you can try. The lower the price, the bigger the chance they'll get sold.

If they are not professionally published cookbooks, but rather a collection of recipes that a church group put together or recipes from a family member that you have organized in a binder, you might divide them up and send them to friends or family who enjoy cooking. Ask them first. You don't want to be adding to someone else's clutter. If you have no takers, don't feel guilty about throwing them out. Recipes are abundant these days and many people are trying to release their clutter as well.

Hope this helps!

P.S. Clear your clutter the fast and easy way with my organizing resource, Goodbye Clutter!
