Organizing Thought of the Day

Watching TV Versus Getting Things Done
|
Did you know that the average American adult watches an estimated 20 hours of
television per week? That's enough time for someone to work a part-time job!
Now, I'm certainly not going to tell you not to watch television. In fact, I
too have my favorite shows that I can't bear to miss each week. (Have you seen
Broadchurch? Very good series!) But, watching too much television can be a huge
obstacle in getting things done, if you allow your viewing time to get
excessive. Here are 5 simple tips:
1. Create a TV budget. Determine how much time per day that you'll allow
yourself, or your kids, to watch television. Perhaps you'd like an hour or two
of TV entertainment at night to unwind after a long day. Make those 1-2 hours
your nightly TV budget, and don't go over your budget.
2. Watch only your Top 5. What programs do you truly enjoy? Grab a sheet
of paper and a pen and list your top 5 favorites. Fit these shows into your
schedule. Limit yourself to watching only those 5 shows each week.
3. DVR it and watch it later. Most half-hour programs can be watched in
20 minutes, and most one-hour programs can be watched in 45 minutes. You can do
this by simply using your DVR to record your programs. When you're interested
in watching something, record it while you do something else: make necessary
phone calls, do laundry, run some errands, etc. Then, watch the show later in
less time, by zipping through the commercials.
4. Expand your horizons. Maybe you've always wanted to start an exercise
program, or perhaps you want to learn to paint.
Come up with a list of things you've been meaning to do and start scheduling
time each day or evening or do them, during the time you would normally watch
TV. You may find that you enjoy your new adventures so much, that you don't
even miss the TV set.
5. Watch and do something else. All right, if you just can't bear to
give up your TV time, that's OK. After all, if you really enjoy watching the
tube, it's your life and you should do what you want. But, you can still get
things done even while you're viewing. Sort through your mail while you're
watching the news. Fold clothes and watch your favorite program at the same
time. You can certainly sew on those missing shirt buttons while you're
enjoying a movie. Dust, or vacuum, or clean out a kitchen cabinet during
commercial breaks. Make that television time productive!

pursue restful activities - spending time in bed, watching TV - while others
delay difficult or unpleasant tasks in favor of those that are more fun.'
