  Organizing Thought of the Day

Be Solution Focused with Tasks You Don't Want To Do

Most people procrastinate when it comes to doing tasks they really don't like doing.

Lara hates to clean her bathroom, so she rarely does it. Because she doesn't do it often, it gets really gross and eventually she has to spend hours one day a month tending to it. As you can imagine, that one day is not a happy day for her. Some possible solutions for Lara:

1. Clean ONE thing in the bathroom once a day. The bathroom won't have a chance of getting gross if you do this, and you will never have to spend hours scrubbing. One day you can disinfect the toilet, the next you can clean the counter, the next you can use a hand vac to vacuum hair off the floor, and so on.

2. Hire a cleaning service. I know these can be a bit pricey, but they save a whole lot of time. You can either get them to clean the entire house for you, or the rooms that are the hardest to keep clean (these are the kitchen and bathrooms for most people.)

3. Share the cleaning duties. If more than one person cleans the bathroom, each person living in the house/apartment should share the cleaning duties. More hands make for lighter work.

Steve does not enjoy going through his mail. He waits all week to begin looking through it and often falls way behind. This procrastination has been the cause of late payments on his bills, missed events, and a kitchen table full of clutter. Some possible solutions for Steve:

1. Make doing something enjoyable contingent upon sorting through the mail. Steve could go through his mail (just one day's worth) each day...and then have his morning coffee. As long as it's just the mail from yesterday, it shouldn't take more than five minutes tops.

2. Steve could make a concerted effort to cut down on his snail mail, perhaps by asking companies to send his bills online, or calling companies and organizations to get his name removed from their mailing lists.

3. Steve could take the time to do whatever he can do to go as paperless as possible. Yes, this takes some work initially, but eventually, there will be hardly any mail to sort if he goes this route.

If you really don't like doing something, it won't help to just dread whatever it is. Be solution focused to make that task a happier one to complete.
