  Organizing Thought of the Day

I Woke Up, Walked in My Living Room, and This is What I Found

I woke up at 6:30am, the Monday after Thanksgiving, ready to begin my day. I had a class I was teaching at 8:00am so I brushed my teeth, got dressed and completed my morning routine. I then walked into my living room and discovered, to my dismay, that our fully decorated Christmas tree was laying half on the sofa and half on our ottoman. I then saw some of our Christmas ornaments...you know, the ones I have been bubble wrapping for more than 20 years. A bunch of them were laying on the floor, seven of them broken.

I woke my husband and said, 'Honey, I need you to get up. We have a bit of a problem...and I need to leave to teach my class in 20 minutes.'

We have an artificial tree that is assembled on a pole stand. The bottom of the pole is made with heavy plastic and has four legs. One of the legs decided it was tired and it snapped off, thus why the tree toppled.

My husband, Joe, took a deep breath, told me to go teach my class, and we'd figure it out later.

A few hours later when I returned home, the tree was back up, and the ornaments, carefully glued back together, were drying on the kitchen counter. Joe fixed the stand with wire, duck tape, and other remedies he had readily available in his toolbox and secured it to a low portable table so there is no way it's going anywhere. He fixed the ornaments with Gorilla Glue. That stuff is amazing and no home should ever be without it. It's impossible to see that the ornaments were put back together. He did a fabulous job.

Suddenly the stress of the morning lifted and I was so grateful to my husband for saving the day. All I had to do at that point was remove the lights, ribbon and decorations from the tree (everything was kitty wampus) and redecorate it. The final step, the big relief, was putting the Christmas skirt back on the tree base. It didn't take that long, and everything is beautiful again.

Three takeaways from this:

a) Always have a well-stocked tool box in your home. There will come a day that you'll need it.

b) Even if your prized ornaments (or whatever possessions you have) are broken and can't be repaired, it helps to have photos of them. Even though Joe was able to repair all seven that were damaged, if they were beyond repair, we would still have the memory in our photo collection.

c) Be grateful to those in your life who make your life a bit easier, less stressful, and a lot happier.

Is there someone in your life who has saved the day for you? I'd love to hear your stories and publish them in this newsletter, as a tribute to the wonderful people we know who make our world a better place to live in.

'The Christmas tree is a symbol of love, not money. There's a kind of glory to them when they're all lit up that exceeds anything all the money in the world could buy.' (Andy Rooney)
