  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
How can I temporarily store my clutter?

A GON Reader Asked:

Hi Maria,

I need your help, please. I want to have someone come and do a deep cleaning, but I have not been successful in eliminating all the clutter. What can I use to store the clutter to allow a cleaning crew to clean and get back to the organizing? Thank you for your help!

--Jewel

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Jewel,

This is actually a perfect situation. You now have the opportunity to choose, and declutter, at least a few rooms. Here's what I suggest:

1. Hire the cleaning company to clean 'most' of your rooms. Use one or two to temporarily store your clutter.

2. Put EVERYTHING except for the absolute essentials in bags and boxes and put them in the room(s) that will not be included in the cleaning.

3. Every single day, go into the temporary clutter storage room and begin making three piles (perhaps a corner of the room for each pile):
a) Keep
b) Give Away
c) Dump

4. Vow to put MOST of the items in the b and c piles. Bring the items in b to your local donation center every few days. Get rid of the items in c on trash day, or bring them personally to your local sanitation department for disposal. It's very important to get these items out of your home to begin making headway.

5. As far as the rooms that the cleaning company will be cleaning, it is critical that you don't put clutter back into these rooms. If you realize that one of your essentials is in the storage room, certainly get it. But be very mindful and only return items to these rooms that you really and truly need and/or love.

Soon enough, the temporary storage rooms, if you're adamant about decluttering them every day, will be ready to be cleaned on another cleaning session day.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted.

___ 2. Extreme clutter? Here's an extreme solution that works. It's called 'Live out of the box.' Box up everything in a cluttered room and remove it from the room. The only remaining items should be the absolute essentials. When you need something, grab it from the box and include it in this room with your essentials. Whatever is left in the box after a month or two is a candidate for the donation center or the trash.
