Fabulous Organizing Tips and Thoughts
from GON Readers
Here are a bunch of tips and thoughts from GON Readers to brighten your day...
Keeping Motivated and Productive in Retirement
I recently retired. Concerned about losing motivation and being productive
after working in sales for 40 years, I went through my house and listed every
chore or project to be done. I typed these out on the computer, cut them into
individual project slips, folded them, and put them in a box.
Whatever I draw out is the next thing to be tackled--NO EXCUSES.
So far, I have painted the kitchen, organized financial records, and sorted
clothes for donation.
To look at a total list would be too daunting, but there is an element of
surprise and challenge to pulling out one at a time.
I also made a list of 'outside projects' for when the weather gets nicer, a
'treat list' for when I feel have been particularly productive and deserve
something special and a 'fun to do' list for classes to join, places to go and
things to do.

I Felt So Fulfilled and Completed Many Projects
As a versatile crafter and collector of stuff for almost 50 years, I have piles
of supplies and materials awaiting the next project. In addition, my friend
moved and left me her craft room--seven 30-gallon trash bags of yarn, fabric
and craft supplies. Plus, my other friend's mother-in-law died and she gave me
three trash bags of yarn.
Knowing I had to organize it immediately or be overwhelmed, I sorted the yarn
by color, then by texture. I did the same with the other crafting supplies and
fabric. I let the piles sit for a couple of days and realistically decided what
I would be able to use in two years.
I purchased clear, plastic, stackable containers and filled them with what I
had decided to keep. I then labeled each side of each container.
Then, I finally gave the rest away to other crafters, knitters and crocheters,
who were thrilled to get free stuff.
I felt so fulfilled and have actually completed many projects. I have made 4
fabric baby quilts, 15 baby afghans, 3 fabric purses and 6 decorator pillows so
far. Plus, I have enough supplies to do many more.

By Doing This, My House is 100 Percent Improved!
Due to illness, my house had become a horrible disorganized mess. I only have
enough energy to stay on my feet for about 10 to 15 minutes maximum at a time.
Last year in January, I thought about my whole house and assigned one room or
closet to each month. Then each day, I took one small area of that room and
totally organized and cleaned it.
At the end of this year my house is 100 percent improved.
This year, I'm doing the same thing, only I'm mainly concentrating on deep
cleaning (like spring cleaning).
This room-by-room method makes a huge task manageable and this could also work
for people who are really busy.
