  Organizing Thought of the Day

Feeling Uneasy When Trying Something New For the First Time

In addition to my organizing business, I teach fitness classes at my local YMCA. Doing so gets me up and moving and I enjoy meeting and helping new people reach their health and fitness goals.

The two main classes I teach, Zumba and Pound Fitness, come with somewhat of a learning curve. When most people start, they may feel a bit uncomfortable. Perhaps they're not used to exercising and may get out of breath within a short period of time. Maybe they're feeling a bit uncoordinated. Perhaps they're not used to exercising in front of others and are feeling self-conscious.

These are not unusual feelings. In fact, they're all perfectly normal. Whenever we're trying something new, whether it's a fitness class, a new computer system at work, or even organizing the garage, it often takes a bit of time and practice for us to feel more at ease with it. We may not like the new thing we're doing at first, or feel we're not very good at it, and end up feeling frustrated.

But when we give something our very best efforts, have good direction and are following the appropriate steps, and we stick with it for awhile, whatever it is often gets easier and more familiar. In turn, when something gets easier and more familiar, it often becomes more enjoyable. I know first-hand that is the case with the majority of the folks who come try my fitness classes. By the third class they attend, almost every single new person is suddenly transformed into feeling more confident and more at ease. The better they know the choreography, the more they like coming to class.

A few weeks ago, I met a new organizing client. Her desk was piled high with paper. She didn't know how to tackle it, so she called me. I could tell she was a bit stressed the first day we met. First, she was embarrassed that her desk was cluttered. Second, she didn't know what to expect.

Little by little, as we both got to know each other and I showed her how to begin tackling that big pile of paper, I could see her shoulders begin to ease.

By the next session, she was a bit more comfortable. She knew me and what the organizing session would be like. She had an idea of how we'd continue tackling her project.

By the third session, I sat there and watched her tackle the final pile...on her own. She was so pleased with herself...and I was thrilled for her.

Whenever you're trying something new for the first time...the second time... and maybe even the third time, know that it's normal to feel a bit out-of-sorts at first. That's just part of the normal process. But don't let that hold you back. Keep going, ask questions along the way, continue to familiarize yourself with the process, and keep that positive self-talk going.

Give yourself the time you need. Everyone processes new tasks, projects, activities, and goals in their own time. After you begin and as you practice, little by little, whatever you're doing will no longer feel so 'new,' you'll feel more at ease with it, and you'll be able to then begin progressing.

P.S. If you want more happiness in your heart, be sure you're adding a bunch of 'happiness actions' into your life. You'll find those happiness actions in my resource,: Happy for Life!
