Beat Procrastination, Once and For All!

Everyone experiences procrastination from time to time. Some people are chronic procrastinators, while others claim they work better under pressure. It's not about being lazy, but often people run out of time or take on too many projects. Some of the things we never get around to doing may be boring, difficult, overwhelming, and/or complicated. Most people procrastinate due to feeling overwhelmed.

Like many things, procrastination is a habit, and habits can be broken. Are you one of the millions who procrastinate? English actor Christopher Parker said, `Procrastination is like a credit card: It's a lot of fun until you get the bill.'

1. Determine if it really needs to be done. If you've had certain TO DOs and/or projects on your list for weeks, months, or years, decide if that project needs to be on your list at all. Sometimes our goals, priorities, and interests change, and that's OK.

2. Get any info that eases your mind. It's very easy to procrastinate when it's something we don't want to do (a colonoscopy or dental work perhaps?), or when it's something we don't know how to do. Get the necessary information (and motivation) from people who will give you honest, helpful feedback. Get your questions answered. Perhaps they will be able to ease your anxieties a bit.

3. Divide big projects into more manageable pieces. The first key is to break down projects. This can be at home or at work. Let's say your entire home is cluttered. Handling that may seem like an impossible task and you may be procrastinating because it seems so colossal. You may be more enticed to start if your only job today is to declutter three items you're not using...and then another three tomorrow. That would be a lot less overwhelming.

4. Find yourself an accountability partner, someone to help monitor your progress. Tell them your plans and continue to tell them as you proceed. Ask them to check in on you so you're accountable to someone other than just yourself.

5. Don't be too hard on yourself. The more stressed or worried about what you have to do, the less likely you are to get started. Concentrate on your strengths and develop a 'can do' attitude. Even if you're moving slowly, you're still moving. Reward yourself every step of the way.
