  Organizing Thought of the Day

GON Reader Mailbox:
Organizing Tips and Ideas
from GON Readers

Here are a bunch of tips and thoughts from GON Readers to brighten your day...

Organizing Kids Art Work
I was feeling so bogged down with all the art work my boys brought home, but was unable to part with it. It just sat piling up in a basket. I bought two binders and a box of page protectors. The boys got to decorate a page to slip into the front of the binder and I labeled the sides.

Now, once a month, we go through their basket of art, date the back of each, and put them in a binder. The best part is, a couple of weeks after I did it, I found the oldest (age 5) paging through his art book and telling his little brother about the different pieces.

Organizing for Couples with a Totally Different Schedule
My boyfriend and I have totally different schedules, so leaving things out for the other to take with them, or to do each day, can be frustrating. If the other person has already gone to sleep (and you don't want to be woken up while you're sleeping) you have to find a way to communicate.

We have found that leaving a giant Ziplock bag attached to our front door with a magnet works perfectly. We just drop anything (credit cards, shopping lists, receipts, keys, etc.) into the bag.

Because it's clear, we can always see if there is something new in it. And, even better, it's a great place to leave love notes!

This Makes Cleaning So Much Easier
After I was married and moved into our first home, I was talking with my mother on the phone and told her that I had been cleaning all day and the house still looked like I hadn't done anything.

After observing my daily routine, it didn't take her long to see what my problem was. I would start in my living room and find something that belonged in the kitchen, so I would take it to the kitchen, get side tracked and I would start cleaning in the kitchen. If I found something that belonged in the bathroom I would take it in there and of course I would start cleaning in the bathroom. No wonder my home took so long to clean! Mother bought me a three tier cart and tied plastic sacks to the handles and then filled a basket with my cleaning supplies.

Now she tells me, no matter what room I start with, I CANNOT leave that room until it's clean and when I find something that belongs in the bathroom or kitchen it goes on one of the shelves on my cart. Since I only had three shelves, Mother put baskets, buckets, boxes, etc. on the shelves for me to put each room's items in. The plastic bags were for trash, cleaning rags or whatever I wanted them to be.

Now my home is clean and it really feels good to see that the hard work I put into it is really nice at the end of the day.

I hope this will help someone out there just like it did me. It makes cleaning so much easier.
