Ask Maria:
Can You Help with the Photo Project I'm Getting Ready to Begin?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Hi Maria,
I will be starting a many generational photo project myself soon. The problem
is I'm not sure how to start? I do have many nieces and nephews I would like to
send pictures to, but I'm not sure the best way to do that. Is it better to put
pictures in albums or just boxes?
The ones I plan on keeping I was thinking of having digitized. Do you know how
I would go about doing that? I'm not exactly certain the best approach for this
undertaking and would appreciate any and all thoughts on the subject.
I read your emails every day and always appreciate your advice and information.
Thanks for all you do!
--Brenda, Westchester County, NY
Maria Gracia's Response:
Hi Brenda,
Thank you for your lovely note and question. I'm not sure how many photos you
have, but sorting is usually a wonderful place to begin with this type of
project. Hopefully you have a large, empty table to work on that will allow you
to keep coming back to this project, a little bit at a time, until it's done.
Just grab a pile (or box) of photos and begin sorting them into piles by
category. When you see a particular pile of photos getting big, that's your
clue that those photos need to be sub-categorized. This may take awhile
depending on how many years of photos you have. Separate vacations, holidays,
pet photos, etc.
For your nieces and nephews, are they still young children or grown up? Young
kids love flipping through mini albums, but teens and adults may prefer digital
photos. If you have a large number of photos you're planning to send to them, I
would actually ask them what they prefer. If you're only talking about a
handful each, I would say a small, inexpensive album of photos would be a nice
gift to send.
For the photos you'd like to digitize, there is a company called Legacy Box,
and many other companies, that you can Google who will easily handle all of
this for you. You mail your photos to them, and they return them to you, all
digitized, via the Cloud, thumb drive, or labeled DVD's. If you'd rather do it
yourself, you can either scan each photo on a scanner, or take a photo of each
photo on your phone. You can then upload these photos to your computer or an
online service, such as Smug Mug.
Hope this helps get you started. Feel free to reply with follow up questions.
Best of luck with this project!
P.S. If you allow it, the 'clutter monster' will take over your home and your
life. Take back control and say goodbye to your clutter today.
Goodbye Clutter!
