  Organizing Thought of the Day

Avoiding Sticker Shock at the Grocery Store

Have you left the grocery store lately looking over your receipt, thinking, 'There must be a mistake here; how is this so high?' You are not alone. Groceries are up by over 6%, the highest since 1990.

Sometimes you see it reflected in higher prices. Sometimes you pay the same price for a smaller container. Coupons and promotions may be scarcer. How can we keep our grocery budgets under control?

You already know about buying fewer prepared or processed foods, comparing prices, using coupons, buying store brands, and not shopping when hungry. Here are a few more to keep in mind that may help.

1. When shopping, especially for meats, consider cost per serving rather than per pound. For example, if beef ribs and ground beef were the same price per pound, you are much better off with a pound of ground beef because you can get four servings per pound versus 1-2 from a pound of ribs.

2. While you're at it, consider meatless meals for at least a few days in your weekly meal plan. Or, make meals that are filled with veggies and contain just a little bit of meat as an accompaniment. It's a lot less expensive.

3. Think about each thing you put in your cart. Tortilla chips? Maybe you can do without. Or make your own, as my friend Sherry recently did with corn tortillas and her air fryer.

4. Plan your meals and shop with a list that you stick to. Avoid the 'aisles of temptation' (chips, candy, and soda.)

5. Make less trips to your grocery store. It cuts temptation and impulse buying in half. You can always make a quick stop for fresh produce in between your regular shopping days, but don't allow yourself to go beyond the vegetable and fruit aisle for those mini-visits.

6. 'Shop' in your refrigerator, freezer, and pantry first. Before making that trip to the grocery store, consider whether you really have to go at all. You may have plenty of food to whip up right under your own roof, and with a bit of creativity, you may be able to get three or four meals out of it.
