4 Effective Ways to Avoid Eye Strain
|
Most of us, these days, invest a whole lot of time staring at our electronic
devices (desktop computer, laptop, cell phone, tablet, TV, etc.). I just
learned that:
About 83% of American adults use digital devices more than two hours a day,
and 53.1% say they use two digital devices at the same time.
(Source: EyeQue)
Doing so can eventually cause eye strain. If you've been experiencing
headaches, blurred vision, eye redness or itching, and/or dry eyes, eye strain
from constantly reading your devices may be the culprit. Most folks are
surprised that 'dry eyes' are a common symptom of eye strain...it's because we
may subconsciously stop blinking while reading our devices.
1. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Noticing some eye strain recently, I put
something I've been neglecting to do back into use. It's called the 20-20-20
rule. Here's how it works:
After staring at your device for 20 minutes,
look at something 20 feet away from you
for a total of 20 seconds.
If you're really bad about noticing how long you're staring at your devices
(time flies...most of us lose track of time easily), set a timer to go off
every 20 minutes to remind you. When the timer sounds, look at something in the
distance for at least 20 seconds or more before returning back to your device.
2. Don't forget to blink. If you're pretty focused, like me, it's
incredibly easy to forget to blink. As you're reading your device, mindfully
notice whether you're blinking or not...and if not, be sure to start doing so.
Blinking keeps our eyes moistened and allows our eyes to refocus.
3. Be sure your computer screen is in the correct position. The top of
your screen should be at least a few inches (two or so) below eye level, so
you're looking downward at it, as well as around 24 inches from where you're
sitting. If you're not that tall and your monitor is sitting on your desk, you
may be wondering how to achieve this. I'm 5 feet, 3 inches tall...so what I did
is I raised the height of my chair, I added a throw pillow to my chair to boost
me up a bit when I'm sitting, and I pushed my monitor back as well.
4. Keep up to date with your optometrist. It's important to get your
eyes checked and keep your contact lens or eyeglass prescription current. If
you experience strained eyes often, he or she may conclude that you need new
glasses, prescribe you special eye drops, or offer other solutions to assist
with those issues.
Eye strain is no fun and very uncomfortable. So if you're experiencing eye
strain, or to prevent it from happening, the above suggestions may make all
the difference in the world.
