  Organizing Thought of the Day

GON Reader Mailbox:
Organizing Tips and Ideas
from GON Readers

Here are a bunch of tips and thoughts from GON Readers to brighten your day...

Making It Easier to Part with Sentimental Items
I recognize the value of de-cluttering as a way to live more serenely. I'm happy to say it has finally become easier to get rid of things that clearly are just taking up valuable space in my life. But, it can be so hard to part with sentimental or nostalgic items, however tattered or out-dated they may be.

My best solution so far has been to take photos of the item before bidding it farewell. A photo, especially a digital one, takes up lots less space than the thing itself, but I can have peace knowing that my sentimental something has not completely left my life, destined to be forgotten over time. If I worry that my computer might crash and lose the image, I can just back it up to a disc or print it and store it.

For those who think a photo won't quite cut it, consider also writing a paragraph or two in a journal about your memories surrounding the item you're about to part with. You'll enjoy revisiting the memory without bemoaning your lack of closet space!

Staying Up-to-Date on Life Events and Appointments
I keep a whiteboard with an attached dry erase marker on the fridge door near the phone. When I make any arrangements, I immediately write the date, time and brief details on it.

I can see at a glance what appointments I have and I put an asterisk next to the ones coming up next to be extra sure. This way I never miss any.

Periodically I remove any I've crossed off and start fresh. I live alone but I am sure this would work for a family too.

Keeping Track of School Activities and Events
When papers come from school that have important information that I need to refer back to later such as room numbers and start times, I put the event on the calendar along with a red letter F that stands for flyer. Then I paperclip the flyer to the back of the calendar.

When the date arrives, I see the F and I know I have all the information I need on hand in the back of the calendar.

Here's What GON in Five Minutes! Means to Me

"Yesterday, I took a solid hour and organized five cabinets in my kitchen. It was a lot of work, but I'm so pleased. I will be doing the same for the other cabinets this coming weekend. It's because of your newsletter that I feel so energized! Thank you!"
-- Rebecca Anderson

"I'm caring for teenagers and my elderly mother. Your newsletter has been a light in my day. It's always so helpful and keeps me grounded."
-- Whitney W.

"I keep your newsletters in a special digital folder in my email program. I named it 'The Maria File.' When I need some motivation, which is practically every day, I sift through your current and past issues."

Because it's impossible to stay on top of everything going on without writing things down, people are getting inundated with more and more paper every day.

You have to remember a birthday, so that gets written on a calendar. You have to make a grocery list, so you scribble down a few items and stick the list on the fridge. Someone gives you a phone number, and it gets written in the address book. You're planning your garden, and that information is stored in a notebook. You want to keep track of the movies you want to see, or the books you want to read--another sheet of paper. A friend gives you an email address on a sticky note that is now attached to your computer monitor.

Paper, paper and more paper--and it's all over your home!

Information is getting lost. Appointments are missed. Goals aren't being met. And all of this adds up to chaos and frustration.

This is where the Get Organized Now! Easy Organizer comes in and saves the day. It allows you to organize all of your information so it's in one place and easily found when you need it!

Here's what just one customer had to say:

The Easy Organizer is just that--it's so easy. I've got lists now in one place that before I'd been carrying around in my head, my pockets, around my desk, in the kitchen... Before, I had post-it notes all over the place. Now they're in my Easy Organizer. A lot of great ideas and important information has been lost in the shuffle before this! I love this thing. Knowing where to find things right away and having a very simple way of entering the info--many kinds, in many forms--is such a relief. This was a great investment...and, really, it's such a great value for everything it includes! Thanks so much!
