Ask Maria:
What to Store in Decorative Boxes and How to Label

A GON Reader Asked:

Hi! I just love stacking boxes, and have quite a few sets, from kind of tiny to fairly large, and I decorate with them. I have been thinking of what might be the best items to store in them that would keep things orderly, where it would be easy to find like-things, and be able to possibly label them so I know what is in them. PLUS, I mainly would like to put things in them that I don't have to be going into constantly as I love to stack them. etc. Any ideas would be helpful! Thank you.

Maria Gracia Responded:

Hi Sandra,

There are so many pretty stacking boxes on the market. I can easily see why you like them! I do as well because they help us store things without the need for an extra closet or storage space. There are literally a gazillion ideas for what you can store in them. Here are just four quick thoughts, based on your criteria of items you may need to keep, but don't need to access every day:

1) Kids school creations: If you're a mom, like me, you likely have stowed away some creations that your kid made in school, a vase that was painted in Kindergarten or a handmade Mother's Day card from a second grade project. You may have even passed on these creations to your child if he or she is grown up and has a family of their own. But if you're in my boots, with an 18 year old getting ready to go into college, or younger, you may still be at the stage where you're hanging onto these for a bit longer. Decorative boxes are perfect for holding these creations for occasional reminiscing and for storage until you're ready to pass them on to your son or daughter.

2) Small clutches and evening bags. I have a stash of small clutches and evening bags that I use, but for more special occasions. These decorative boxes are perfect storage containers to keep these clean and handy when you need them.

3) Box of nail polish. If you like to polish your nails and have an assortment of colors, these stacking boxes offer great storage space for your nail polish collection.

4) Stationery and supplies. Maybe you write a handwritten letter on occasion? If so, these boxes hold pretty stationery, stamps, and return address labels...organized and handy.

As far as labeling them, yes, this is important. Otherwise, you're going to be playing a guessing game every time you need something. You can certainly use a label maker and stick the label on the lower back of the box so it's visible to you at a glance, but also so it doesn't detract from the pretty appearance of the box. Alternately, you can place a very tiny letter on the back of the box (A, B, C, etc.) and simply have a list on your phone or computer that cross-references what's in what box.

Hope this provides you with some useful ideas.

Because it's impossible to stay on top of everything going on without writing things down, people are getting inundated with more and more paper every day.

You have to remember a birthday, so that gets written on a calendar. You have to make a grocery list, so you scribble down a few items and stick the list on the fridge. Someone gives you a phone number, and it gets written in the address book. You're planning your garden, and that information is stored in a notebook. You want to keep track of the movies you want to see, or the books you want to read--another sheet of paper. A friend gives you an email address on a sticky note that is now attached to your computer monitor.

Paper, paper and more paper--and it's all over your home!

Information is getting lost. Appointments are missed. Goals aren't being met. And all of this adds up to chaos and frustration.

This is where the Get Organized Now! Easy Organizer comes in and saves the day. It allows you to organize all of your information so it's in one place and easily found when you need it!

Here's what just one customer had to say:

The Easy Organizer is just that--it's so easy. I've got lists now in one place that before I'd been carrying around in my head, my pockets, around my desk, in the kitchen... Before, I had post-it notes all over the place. Now they're in my Easy Organizer. A lot of great ideas and important information has been lost in the shuffle before this! I love this thing. Knowing where to find things right away and having a very simple way of entering the info--many kinds, in many forms--is such a relief. This was a great investment...and, really, it's such a great value for everything it includes! Thanks so much!
