5 Super Ways to Get Your Time Back
|
You've heard the phrase, 'time flies when you're having fun.' I've personally
found that it also flies when you're trying to get something done. Before
you know it, the last hour has flown by in a flash, and you're left wondering
how in the world you're going to get to the other items on your TO DO list.
That's why it's so important to make the best of the time we have, and to
save time whenever possible. Here are three super ways to get your time back.
1. Consolidate at least two errands per trip, three if possible.
Whenever you get in your car to run an errand, try to accomplish at least two
to three errands in that one trip. For instance, on my way to the supermarket
this morning, I dropped off some books at the library and I got fuel for my
car.
2. Double up. Whenever I cook, I almost always prepare enough for at
least two family meals. As soon as the meal is cooked, half of the portion goes
in the fridge or the freezer and we eat it another night that week. By doing
this, I only have to cook three days each week--three meals doubled up takes
care of 6 meals. And we eat out, take out, or buy something that's pre-prepped
at the grocery store for the 7th night!
3. Group like-tasks together. Once you're 'in the mode' of doing
something, it's quicker to do whatever it is all at once, instead of starting
it, stopping it, and then re-starting it later. For instance, rather than
checking my email whenever a notification pops up, I check ALL of my email
twice each day at specific times and handle it then.
4. Get ready for tomorrow, today. Choose what you'll be wearing
tomorrow and lay it out...outfit, shoes, and accessories. You'll immediately
see if something needs to be hemmed or ironed, so you can handle doing that
before the morning rush. Plus, less thinking required in the morning means
a more productive start.
5. Find your time vampires. Very often, it's one or two major activities
that are using up the majority of your time. Identify them. Are you scrolling
Facebook for more than 30 minutes a day? Is it taking way too long for you
to clean house? Is your commute time getting back and forth to work not worth
what you're getting paid to do the job? Very often, getting our time back
takes some soul searching and re-defining our goals and priorities.

___ 2. Use a visual timer. To help you (and/or your kids or grandkids)
stay on track with your time, use a
visual timer. You simply set the timer
for how quickly you wish to complete a task (like 20 minutes, or 30 minutes,
etc.) and then the timer counts down. When you know the clock is counting down,
you'll be less likely to waste time doing other activities that are off-task.
It's great for classroom, home, and office settings.
