Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
Am I a Bad Person if I Toss These?
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Thank you, Maria, for helping make the years happier than they might have been!
My question: There are several opened food items in my refrigerator that are
taking up space. These are items I can't, for some reason, use anymore. My
brother doesn't want any of them and most people and food banks don't want
something opened, which I understand. Am I a bad person if I toss these?
Appreciating you,
--Arlene in MD
Maria Gracia Responded:
Hi Arlene,
We all make purchases that, on occasion, we cannot use shortly after we buy it.
Maybe it's a salad dressing that we think we might enjoy, and then discover we
don't care for. Perhaps we buy a food that is high sodium right before a doctor
advises we go on a low-sodium eating plan. Maybe it's even something someone
gave us that we feel guilty tossing, but for one reason or another, we know
we're never going to eat it.
It happens to all of us!
You can try asking a family member or friend if they want it, like you have
with your brother. But that's as far as it should go. At that point, if nobody
is willing to take it off your hands, chalk it up to experience and pitch it.
NO, you're NOT a bad person for tossing it. In fact, just you asking this
question tells me that you're a person with a big heart. It's much better that
you toss it than allowing it to sit in your refrigerator until it goes bad...in
which case you're going to have to toss it eventually anyway.
Get rid of it, guilt-free. Hope this confirmation helps.
P.S. Clear your clutter the fast and easy way with my organizing resource,
Goodbye Clutter!
