  Organizing Thought of the Day

Yes, You Have to Clean Your Washing Machine

Have you ever wondered why you are supposed to clean your washing machine? After all, you run it with detergent multiple times a week. However, today's washing machines generally use less water. We often wash using cold water too, to save energy. But we are probably washing the same amount of dirt, body oils, pet fur, etc., that we have always washed. So a little extra cleaning is needed now and then to deal with buildup that can cause odors.

1. The tub. There are several ways to clean the tub. You can run an empty cycle using hot water and vinegar or Borax. Check the manufacturer's website first to make sure they do not advise against using these. If they are OK, you can find correct amounts and when to add them on the web. An easier way is with special cleaners made for the washer. You drop in a tablet and run a cycle with hot water. Or, your machine may have a special washer cleaning cycle built in.

2. Clean gaskets, dispensers, etc. After cleaning the tub, clean all around the opening, being sure to clean the gaskets, dispensers for detergent and bleach, etc. I keep a chopstick (yes, the type you use for Chinese take-out food) to remove fabric softener that tends to build up in the softener dispenser located in the center of my washing machine. I gently scrape around the circular dispenser with the side (not the point) of the chopstick, to remove it.

3. Wipe the outside with a damp cloth to remove fingerprints, dirt, etc.

4. Leave the door open. Many manufacturers suggest leaving the door open to prevent odors that occur with the tight seal of many washers, particularly front loaders. When my washing machine isn't in use, the door is open.

There you have it. Cleaning the washer is easy, quick, and will pay off in cleaner clothes that don't harbor odors.
