  Organizing Thought of the Day

Random Acts of Time Savings

Do you feel frazzled and a bit overwhelmed at times because there doesn't seem to be enough time in the day to get everything done? How can you squeeze more time into those days that are already bursting at the seams? Performing just a few random acts of time savings can help.

1. Make and use checklists. Making a checklist for purses, briefcases, travel cases, school backpacks, and gym bags will keep the guesswork (and time) out of wondering if you have everything you need. Keep the checklists in a binder where they will be easy to find when you need to check the contents of a particular carrying case.

2. Remove your shoes upon entry. Taking your shoes off on your door mat, or leaving them outside the door, will prevent you from tracking in a lot of dirt--about 80% worth! This means less time cleaning up!

3. Eat breakfast. Sluggish starts make for very unproductive days. Studies show that those who eat breakfast on a daily basis tend to have better problem solving skills, improved memory and attention span, and even more physical ability than those who skip breakfast. Nutritious choices will fuel your body and provide the energy you need to face the day.

4. Use a timer. Timers often give many people the motivation they need to do tasks just a bit faster. Plus, they have a magical way of helping us 'stay on task.' Most people are less likely to check email or scroll through Facebook if they know a deadline is pending AND the timer is ticking.

5. Keep a tote bag handy. Place it on the doorknob or a hook near the door where you typically exit your home. Put everything into it that you need for the next day, like library books that need to be returned or dry cleaner slips. When you're ready to leave the house, just grab the bag on your way out. No thinking required during the morning rush.
