6 Ways to Stop Losing Your Stuff
Are you always misplacing things? If so, that is not only frustrating, but the search that follows can be very time consuming as well. Here are 6 ways to stop losing your stuff.
1. Never place a big item over a small item. Something as simple as a newspaper being placed over a set of keys can end up in an unnecessary search. A small sticky note doesn't stand a chance under a pile of papers. It will be hidden immediately and may even end up stuck to the papers, making
it even more challenging to find it when you need it.
2. Be careful about mindlessly putting something down. When you put your phone down, "name" its location out loud. For instance, say, "I'm putting the phone on the kitchen counter by the utensil organizer" or "I'm putting the phone in my briefcase." You'll be more likely to remember where it
is when you state its location.
3. Record where you're storing it. Phones make it much easier not to lose things these days. Use any list app on your phone, such as the one I use (Paperless), and record where you're storing things. For instance, I've been storing my daughter's new graduation ring until graduation day. I've
noted exactly where the location is in my app.
4. Make some items stand out. Sometimes I purposely buy items so they don't "blend" in, because when they do, they sometimes become invisible. I have a "yellow" wallet in my purse that has a "black" lining. A black wallet inside a black lining would be harder to spot immediately. I have
a "white "and very "sparkly" phone case. It's very visible on dark furniture.
5. Have homes for items and put them in those homes when not in use. I know that sometimes it takes an extra few seconds to walk over to the key holder to put your keys away...or to take those steps into your home office to put an important paper into its proper folder. But, doing so
takes a lot less time than putting one of the items "somewhere else," then forgetting where that somewhere else is, and then having to look everywhere for it.
6. Use technology as a safeguard. Determine those items that you misplace regularly and use technology to help you locate them quickly. Electronic finders are small electronic devices that can locate keys, wallets, cellphones and more.
