How Do I Separate My Filing System into Categories?

Hi Maria!

Thank you so much for the many tips and tricks. I am getting ready to revamp my home office and bought new file folders that are in four different colors (red, blue, green, and yellow). My plan is to use the colors to categorize and then alphabetize within each color.

What I am struggling with is how to separate everything into four different categories. Do you have any tips for this? I do not run a business from my home or anything like that.

I just need some sort of filing system for important documents such as tax and banking info, vet records, certifications, and some memorabilia for my children.

While some of this is digital, not all of it is, and there are some things that I feel more comfortable having both a digital and physical copy.

Hi Sherah,

Thank you so much for your question. For a very super-basic filing system, based on the categories you provided, perhaps the following four categories would work for you.

Personal (Red)

Financial (Green)

Medical (Blue)

Home (Yellow)

Also, take a look at the amount of papers you're thinking about filing away. Many homes benefit from a small filing cabinet, but some folks can get away with simple file boxes.
