Christine had a nice closet, a walk-in closet she did not share with anyone. She had loved it when she and her husband bought the house, imagining it filled with her clothes, nicely organized, and Pinterest-worthy.
After a while, however, she knew it was just not quite right. Not that it is a bad closet by any means; she had the space she needed, and it was pretty well organized. But it was just missing something.
While admitting it sounded a little silly, Christine wanted to be more excited about her closet. She did a bit of research, a little shopping, and made a few small changes that made a big improvement.
1. Christine began with brighter lighting. While most fixtures have a maximum wattage you should not exceed, brighter bulbs can be found. Not wanting to spend the money on a new light fixture, Christine bought brighter bulbs and cleaned the fixture she had. The closet became noticeably
brighter.
2. A step stool was her next addition. Being just a bit over 5 feet tall, Christine often had to go to the laundry room to retrieve a step
stool if she wanted anything on an upper shelf. Buying a small step stool for inside her closet saved time and effort.
3. A shoe rack to keep her shoes neatly lined up followed. No more shoes scattered willy-nilly over the closet
floor.
4. A few shelf dividers were next, keeping her folded clothes neatly stacked.
5. She tidied up her t-shirts. She had seen the idea of grouping t-shirts together by color and liked how it looked. So she rearranged the tees and knit tops that were on hangers. The colors looked great that way.
6. Her next step was to clean the floor. There were threads, a bit of cat fur, and tiny pieces of paper that had found their way to the floor. A good vacuuming did wonders.
8. She "decorated" her closet. She thought she was done but then found the finishing touch at a craft show—a little sign that read, “No outfit is complete without a little cat hair on it.” With three cats in the household, she knew she just had to get that. It makes her smile and reminds her to check her
clothing for cat fur before going out.
All of the changes were small. Nothing cost much, and nothing took a lot of time. But those little things made all the difference.
The closet will never be seen on Pinterest, but it makes Christine happy and gives her a lift whenever she walks in it.
