Toss any receipts you're holding onto for small-ticket items, like groceries, fuel, restaurant meals, book store, etc. As long as you know you're not going to be returning it, and as long as you don't have to keep it as proof for taxes, work, or a warranty, get rid of
it.
Regarding whether to repair something yourself, don't be afraid to search for a part for something that is old.
The light cover to our bathroom light/fan was broken when we moved into our house, and my husband figured we would just need to buy a new unit because it was probably original to the house thirty years ago.
But I Googled the model number, and sure enough, there was some place that had the exact thing we needed!
Your story about hurting your foot reminded me of a similar situation!
I was carrying my old cat to her food bowl so she was blocking my view as I caught the corner of a litter box with my foot, and then slipped trying to regain my balance.
I ended up falling into a corner hitting my head and breaking my wrist! Talk about a freak accident.
Thankfully, the cat was unhurt, and I didn't need surgery or a cast. Just a brace and sling for a while.
This happened a year ago, but I learned a valuable lesson of not obstructing my view when I am walking and to never assume there is a clear path ahead!
