Empty all the trash bins in your home. Be sure there are extra trash liners at the bottom of each bin, so you can open the new one and begin again.

  Organizing Thought of the Day

Ask Maria:
What do I do with my nice work clothing?

A GON Reader Asked:

Hi Maria, I love your newsletter and have been reading it for years. My question is with Covid. I just found out that I will be working permanently from home and I have a closet full of work clothes that are very nice.

I was thinking of donating them to an organization for women who are re-entering the work force. I know Goodwill would take them, but do you have any other suggestions? I don't believe Bottomless Closet is available in my area, which is where I used to donate clothes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so very much!!

Maria Gracia's Response:

Hi TR,

More and more people are working remotely permanently these days, following the height of the pandemic. I am certain there are many people in your shoes and, in fact, many of my friends are now doing this as well. Here are four possibilities:

1) Consider wearing them. Not everyone feels this way, but personally, I'm way more productive when I'm dressed in nice office clothes, even though I work in my home office quite a bit. Plus, I often am on Zoom calls these days and I like looking nice and professional for those. So, before you give your work clothes away, determine if you can be just as productive in your cozy, comfy clothes. If you can't, you may regret you said goodbye to them so soon.

2) Donate them online. There are some organizations that will gladly take your business clothes, such as Dress For Success, Career Gear, etc. Google 'donate my business clothes' and your 5 digit zip code. See what pops up in the search. Another possibility is simply posting a message on your Facebook page, such as, 'Hi local friends. I have some business clothes I'm no longer in need of that I'm giving away to anyone who can make use of them. Most items are size 10 (or whatever size your clothing is).' Then include some photos and see if anyone replies.

3) Check with your local schools. Some middle and high school students, especially those in lower-income areas, need business clothing for a variety of purposes, like theater, or mock trials, scholarship interviews, job shadowing opportunities, etc. Ask theater-organizations in your area too! They may want them for their plays.

4) Ask a community outreach center or women's shelter. They generally help provide employment assistance and employment resources to those they service in the community.

Hope some of these ideas help!

Because it's impossible to stay on top of everything going on without writing things down, people are getting inundated with more and more paper every day.

You have to remember a birthday, so that gets written on a calendar. You have to make a grocery list, so you scribble down a few items and stick the list on the fridge. Someone gives you a phone number, and it gets written in the address book. You're planning your garden, and that information is stored in a notebook. You want to keep track of the movies you want to see, or the books you want to read--another sheet of paper. A friend gives you an email address on a sticky note that is now attached to your computer monitor.

Paper, paper and more paper--and it's all over your home!

Information is getting lost. Appointments are missed. Goals aren't being met. And all of this adds up to chaos and frustration.

This is where the Get Organized Now! Easy Organizer comes in and saves the day. It allows you to organize all of your information so it's in one place and easily found when you need it!

Here's what just one customer had to say:

The Easy Organizer is just that--it's so easy. I've got lists now in one place that before I'd been carrying around in my head, my pockets, around my desk, in the kitchen... Before, I had post-it notes all over the place. Now they're in my Easy Organizer. A lot of great ideas and important information has been lost in the shuffle before this! I love this thing. Knowing where to find things right away and having a very simple way of entering the info--many kinds, in many forms--is such a relief. This was a great investment...and, really, it's such a great value for everything it includes! Thanks so much!
