The Benefits of Balancing...in the Literal Sense
|
I often talk about life balance...the balance most of us are seeking to be
sure our personal, family, work, social, and spiritual lives are all getting
some priority on our lists. But today, I want to talk about balance in
the literal sense. After all, everything in life is related to getting and
staying organized...and our health should be at the top of the list.
How often do you think about balance--that ability that allows us to stand and
move? It's more important than many people think.
Balance becomes more critical as we age. We probably all know at least one
older person who has fallen and broken a hip. Even if old age is far away, the
time to start working on balance is now. Here is why:
1. Good balance helps you avoid falls. When practicing your balance, you
develop more of what is known as 'kinesthetic awareness,' knowing where your
body is in space. You are less likely to take falls. If you do, however, having
good balance allows you to adjust your movements more quickly when an
unexpected loss of footing occurs.
2. It's excellent for your posture. Good balance requires good posture.
3. It has been shown that people with good balance often recover from injury
faster. If someone cannot prevent a fall, they may fall in a less damaging
way.
4. It helps you be more coordinated. This will help us do regular
activities in a more productive, focused manner.
5. Balancing can help to strengthen muscles. Stabilizer muscles,
including those in your core, get a workout with some balancing moves.
6. Balancing helps us think more clearly. Studies have indicated that
balancing exercises can result in improved cognitive skills among older women
reporting memory issues.
Activities like yoga and tai chi are good exercises that incorporate balance.
You might look for balancing classes or work with a trainer. Of course, check
with your doctor if you have any conditions that might make these exercises
inadvisable.
But the time to start is now.
