Keeping Track of Magazines Subscriptions
|
If you get magazine subscriptions via snail mail, you may have noticed how
often magazine renewal cards/letters appear in your mailbox? I get it. The
magazine companies know that many people dismiss those renewals as
'low-priority tasks', they know folks often wait to renew until the very last
minute, and they're also aware that some folks are considering not renewing at
all. The earlier you renew, the better it is for the magazine company.
My husband and I were out to dinner with another couple and we were all talking
about magazines we subscribe to. My friend's husband said to his wife, 'By the
way, our Time Magazine needs to be renewed. We got a notice yesterday.'
His wife confirmed that she saw the renewal notice, had already check the
expiration date on a recent issue, and determined that the subscription was not
set to run out until more than a year from now.
A little subscription know-how and organization can help.
1. Keep a list of the magazines you subscribe to, when they expire, and
what you last paid to resubscribe. It's nice to have all of this information in
one place, especially if you subscribe to a number of titles. Renew, if you
wish to, about three months prior to the actual expiration date and you should
not miss out on any magazine issues.
Your subscription expiration date is on the magazine's address label, usually
above your name. It should state the month and year. Example June 2022, 06/22,
JU22, JUN 22, or some variation of those.
2. Do you really want to renew a particular magazine? Perhaps you
subscribe to a lovely, glossy, lifestyle magazine, even though the content
looks nothing like your lifestyle. Maybe you don't like the recipes you
originally thought you would either. Drop that subscription. You won't miss it
and you'll be saving yourself some money.
3. Assess your reading time. If you don't have the time to read your
magazines, either set time aside (actually plan that time in your
calendar/planner), or ditch the subscription and just pick up a single issue
now and then from your grocery store.
4. Consider a digital magazine subscription. I've canceled all of my
print magazine subscriptions and have opted to read them digitally on Apple
News for a low monthly subscription fee. Why did I do this? First, I read a
number of magazines, and it is way less expensive to get them digitally.
Second, I do most of my magazine reading 'away from home' (in Starbucks, at the
doctor's office, etc.) and I love having all of my books and magazines on one
small device (I have an
Amazon Kindle.)
That being said, when you have a digital subscription, you really have to
be good about reading those magazines. It auto-renews every single month,
so if you're not enjoying them, then you're wasting your money.
Another tip, if you choose to go the digital route, is that many public
libraries offer access to many magazines for free. So, see if that's an option
where you live, before you spend the money on a subscription service.
Finally, if you are willing to let a subscription go and wait a little bit, you
may get a good 'we want you back offer'. On the other hand, sometimes you
may realize you're not even missing it, and decide to cancel after all.
Happy reading!
