Ask Maria:
Need Help Organizing My Refrigerator
|
A GON Reader Asked:
Good morning,
I just purchased a new French door refrigerator and I need help in organizing
it. It is so large that everything seems to just get put any old place. My
older one was a side by side and I could keep it organized because it was
smaller and everything had a place or shelf. I could use some suggestions.
--Karen
Maria Gracia's Response:
Hi Karen,
Congratulations on your new refrigerator. One trick for organizing a large
fridge is to 'divide' the large sections into smaller sections. For instance,
in my refrigerator, the top shelf is for two purposes. One section is for
ricotta cheese, sour cream, yogurt, and hummus...and the other section is for
milk, iced tea, and fizzy water. There's sort of an imaginary line between the
two...as well as about an inch of empty space separating these two categories.
You can also
divide up sections with refrigerator bins.
I like those that are clear and have a handle for pulling out easily. These are
wonderful for corralling similar categories of items and keeping them together.
Be sure everyone in your house knows what types of items to put on what
shelves. I know this is sometimes easier said than done, especially in homes
with kids. But try to encourage everyone to follow the assigned shelves.
Speaking of assigned shelves, this actually means that you have to know where
you want everything to go. Make up a quick chart and affix to the fridge with a
magnet until everyone is used to what goes where. Always assign so that
like-items are with like-items.
Adjust this chart if you try an arrangement and decide it needs to be tweaked.
Quickly move items that are out of place to the correct shelves if you see
they're out of place.
Always keep leftovers in one place, and use them within one to two days. This
way, they don't have too much of a chance of being pushed to the back of
the fridge.
Hope this helps you get your refrigerator organized so you can thoroughly
enjoy your new purchase!
