Yes, we all know we should clean and organize our refrigerators. But have you thought about all the reasons why?
A clean fridge means it's sanitary, of course. An organized fridge means we can find what we need. But let's look beyond those two benefits.
A well-organized fridge can actually cut back on waste, save you money, help you stay healthy, and inspire creative meals.
1. Display like a store. A neat, attractive display will help you spot straight away exactly what you have and stop you from buying extra that won’t be used. You’ll also see what needs to be used up before it has a chance to spoil. Rotate the contents so that the older items are towards the front to be used first.
2. Check on condition. Food that is reaching the end of its life won’t look or smell good. An organized fridge will allow you to spot and remove wilting leaves, cheese with mold, expired milk, etc.
3. Store logically. Store like-items together. Keep fresh foods away from the back where they can freeze. Check that vegetables and fruits are stored separately. Some fruits produce a chemical to help them ripen, but it can make other foods go bad faster.
4. Know that color indicates healthy. Variety in your diet is essential for health. Colorful fresh foods help to ensure that a range of vitamins and minerals is available to consume. Plus seeing all of that beautiful color in your fridge can be a testament to you wanting to live a healthy lifestyle.
5. Attract your inner chef. Good looking food encourages and inspires you to be creative. When you can quickly see attractive produce, you may be more likely to try that new recipe or dive in for a helping of fresh fruit, rather than a sugary snack.
6. Allow space to breathe. Is your fridge so packed that the contents are jumbled together in piles? This may mean that there isn’t enough circulating air to keep everything fresh. Don’t overstuff your shelves and allow yourself the room to see and be able to access what you want.
Although arranging your fridge to look good may seem like an extra, unnecessary task, it can help you cut waste, enjoy cooking, encourage healthy choices, and provide inspiration for your meals.
