Change can be challenging sometimes. We find peace in what we're used to. When something disrupts that familiarity, we may feel a bit uncomfortable.
You've probably heard that we should "embrace change." Yes, I agree with that when I feel the change is for the better.
For instance, when it comes to the way my GON subscribers have been reading my newsletter throughout the years, we have seen a major change. Many of my subscribers are now reading my newsletter and web site on their phones. Check out this change from 2021 to 2022...I was shocked!
July to December 2021
62% Desktop
33% Phone
5% Tablet
January to April 2022
50% Desktop
42% Phone
8% Tablet
There is no doubt that the number of people solely using their phones for reading online is increasing dramatically and super-fast.
I see this as a good change. Now people don't have to be home or in their office to read my newsletter. They can read it from anywhere, at anytime.
Like many other businesses and organizations who have web sites and newsletters, you're likely seeing font sizes, especially on mobile, increase. You may also be seeing fonts that are a bit bolder, as well as line spacing above and beyond each row of type increase.
So, we had to "change with the times" so to speak.
We had to come up with a format that is both readable on a desktop and on a phone...without people having to squint and strain their eyes.
You likely noticed, as of last week, that we've reformatted our newsletter to meet these needs. Yes, if you're on your phone, you probably need to scroll a bit more, but hopefully the type is much easier to read.
We made these changes after extensive research on what works best for most devices.
That all being said, I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments on this, or anything you want to say for that matter. Just reply to this newsletter anytime and let me know what's on your mind.
Finally, I'd like to provide three tips that have helped me through this new change. Perhaps they will help you when you're going through a necessary change of routine in your life.
1. Maintain your other routines: Change is not always easy and it often begins with a bit of resistance prior to acceptance. That's why it's important to maintain your other routines (your schedule, your self-care, etc.) whenever you're working through something that's different in your
life.
2. Expect bumps along the road: When we have to change something in our lives, we're often hoping that change goes smoothly and has no bumps. For most changes we have to make, that's just not realistic.
There are likely going to be bumps. We're likely going to have to make tweaks.
Acknowledging that bumps may be ahead allows us to slow down and remain in "solution mode," rather than "frustration mode," while we work through the change.
3. Keep your eyes on the prize: While it's important to acknowledge the discomfort we may be feeling, keeping our eyes on the benefits of what we're doing will help us move forward faster.
Sometimes those benefits are buried deep under all the frustration. Give yourself time to relax and find those benefits under the rubble. The more positive you're feeling about the change, the easier it will be to accept and embrace it.
Author John Maxwell once said, "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional." Sometimes we have to experience life outside of our comfort zones to move forward, to improve, and to keep up with the ever-evolving world we live in.
