So many times I've heard:
"I have to clean out the garage."
"My entire kitchen is a disaster."
"My office is the most disorganized it has ever been!"
Those are all big projects. They can certainly be done, but they're going to take time and effort. For many people, the thought of even beginning projects of this scope sends them running for the hills.
They may feel overwhelmed.
They may feel there's not enough time in the day, or a lifetime, to get it done.
They may feel way too overwhelmed to even begin.
When you want to get organized, the only thing you need to do is begin. And by begin, I mean just take that one first step.
- Clear off "a small section" of the kitchen counter.
- Donate one article of clothing you never wear.
- Get rid of one pair of shoes that hurt.
- Weed out one drawer.
- Delete one email.
- Say goodbye to a phone app you don't use.
- Give away one book you won't read again.
- Sort through one box.
- Recycle unnecessary papers from one file folder.
- Do one load of laundry.
Once that one thing is done, you may want to do another right away. Or that may be all you can do at that time.
Either way, you're going to end up a bit more organized today than you were yesterday. And that's the ultimate goal.
