We have all had those bad days when we just cannot wait to get home and forget the day ever happened. But what can we do to literally and figuratively wash away the day?
As important as it is to physically unwind from a hard day, it is just as important to mentally disconnect. But how can it be done? Here are some ideas:
Figuratively
1. Through Meditation: After a long day, we could all use some peace, quiet, and time for thought and reflection. A perfect way to detach yourself from everything is practicing the art of meditation, allowing your mind to wander and your thoughts to be free. It enables you to forget the
troubles of the day, to release stress, and refocus.
2. Reading a Book: In my opinion, there is no better way to transport your mind to another place than via the complete immersion of a good book. By letting yourself be enveloped into the magical world of storytelling, you can unwind and inwardly find your peace.
3. Putting pen to paper: Writing can be one of the most relaxing and thought-diverting activities for your mind. It requires concentration and helps to release new ideas. Why not begin a reflection journal so you can pen down all your thoughts from the day?
Transferring what has happened onto paper gives you an opportunity for introspection and quiet reflection.
Literally
4. Having a bath or shower: Sinking into a bubble bath or enjoying a hot steamy shower can wash off your stress, while the oil, dirt, and sweat that build up during the day go down the drain.
The hot water relaxes your muscles and provides time to physically recuperate from what we have been doing. This is why we tend to spend so much time in the shower. It's not for the super cleanliness, but rather for the relaxation!
5. Getting into comfy clothes: Why is it, when we get home from work or from a tough day, the first thing we do is change our clothes? When you put distance between you and your clothing, you're putting distance between yourself and the day you've had.
Let's face it, most of us feel far more comfortable when we can leave the day behind and change into our sweatpants or PJs!
6. Exercise it out: Perhaps to wind down you prefer a gentle walk, a relaxing swim, or maybe even a little yoga. I know I do! A physical activity can help distract us from our strenuous days.
When we exercise, we release endorphins that help reduce our stress levels. By exercising after a busy day, we are literally removing all that accumulated tension and pressure.
Hopefully, you now have some useful methods to help you disconnect and remove stress. Next time you have one of those full-on days and you just want to get home and wash the day away, try a little physical or mental tender-loving-care.
