I've had so many people tell me that their leftovers get pushed to the back of the refrigerator, and by the time they realize it, that food is no longer good to
eat. Here are 5 tricks I use so we're not wasting food that we purchased and took time and energy to prepare:
1. Always store leftovers in glass containers. Doing so makes
the food easy to see without having to open the container, makes it more appetizing, you can safely heat food in that glass container in the microwave, and glass is easier to clean as well...into the dishwasher it goes when you're done.
2. Don't go grocery shopping too soon. Going to the grocery store and shopping before the refrigerator is empty makes it easy for those leftovers to get pushed to the back of the refrigerator. Instead, use up what you have, do a quick refrigerator cleanup, and THEN go shopping.
3. Eat leftovers for lunch. If eating leftovers for lunch is a rule in your home, chances are you won't have any leftovers getting tossed in the trash.
4. If you didn't like it the first time... Sometimes we make meals that we end up not liking. If nobody enjoyed a certain meal the first time around, they're certainly not going to enjoy it the second time. Plus, some meals that you do like on day one, just don't taste as good on the second or third day. Don't save leftovers
that you're certain nobody is going to eat.
5. Cut back on your cooking volume. If your family isn't thrilled about eating leftovers, cut back on how much you're cooking.
Make just enough for that one meal.
