Ice cube trays make wonderful organizers. You may have one or two stashed away somewhere or you can
pick a few up from a dollar-type store. Here are some ideas:
1. Organize the small items in your junk drawer. Sort out tiny items that you need to have on hand and place them in your tray; tacks, paper clips, safety pins, etc.
2. Organize your earrings and rings. Ice cube trays keep earrings and rings separated and easily visible. You can also use a compartment to store extra backs for pierced earrings.
3. Sort out small craft items. Beads, wiggly eyes, sequins, tiny scrapbooking brads, and other tiny craft items are perfectly stored in ice cube trays.
4. Use them to freeze food. There are so many possibilities here. Freezing food in ice cube trays helps prevent food waste and ensures you have what you need when you need it. Here are just a few ideas.
- You can easily freeze chicken, beef, or vegetable stock in ice cube trays to use for popping into a recipe that calls for it.
- Add leftover coffee to an ice cube tray and freeze...perfect for iced-coffee that's not watered down.
- Do you have more buttermilk than what you need? Freeze it in ice cube trays!
- Freeze and preserve fresh herbs in olive oil...pop them out later and use them in your favorite recipes.
- Freeze an uncooked egg white or egg yolk in ice cube trays and freeze them for later.
- Freeze leftover wine...great for when you're cooking something that calls for a bit of wine.
5. Start seeds in dirt-filled ice cube trays. If you want a jump start on a garden, consider starting your seeds in dirt filled trays. When ready to plant, carefully take out the plant, along with the dirt. Silicone trays make removing easier.
