Question
How can we dispose of partially used household cleaning products? Are they considered hazardous waste? Thanks,
-- Denise

Hi Denise,
Thank you for your question. Half-used cleaning products can often be donated. Check with your local churches, gyms, homeless shelters, and Humane Societies. They may take them off of your hands and make good use of the products you're not using.
Another option is to post a Facebook message to your friends..."Hi local friends. I have some partially used cleaning products (bleach, copper cleaner, window cleaner, etc.) that I know I'm not going to use. If you'd like them, reply and I'll drop them off on your doorstep."
If all else fails, some cleaning products can simply be dumped down your drain. Liquid detergent and liquid disinfectant, for example, are both water soluable. If the cleaner isn't liquid, pour it in slowly with the water running so it doesn't clog your drain. Disinfectant wipes, scouring pads, and cleaning erasers can be tossed in your trash can.
There are some household cleaners that should be treated with more care, however. Like if you have partially used oven cleaner or furniture polish, those may contain hazardous waste.
Your best bet is to call your local sanitation company and see if they have guidelines on their web site for disposal of various household cleaning products. If they don't, ask them about the ones you have that are in question, and they'll be able to steer you in the right direction.
Hope this helps a bit.
