GON Reader Question
I'd like some ideas on how to organize for a dog! Just browsing on the internet, I'm amazed at how much there is to do in choosing the right breed, finding the right breeder, and preparing for ownership, its care, feeding, and training, and then finding and listing contacts for a kennel, a
vet, a groomer, etc.
Has anyone ever organized the information they've gathered to keep track of it all? Where and how do I start?
Thank you!

Hi J.L.,
Thank you so much for your question. Organizing for choosing a pet may seem overwhelming, but if you take the process step-by-step, it's not so bad and hopefully will turn out to be one of life's greatest joys for you.
1. Begin researching. First, begin researching what type of dog you would like, based on a) your personality, b) your time, c) the space in your home, d) your lifestyle, and e) your budget. For instance...
Personality: If you're looking for a dog to cuddle with you near the sofa, you may not be interested in a dog that is super-energetic and can't sit still.
Time: If your time is limited, you probably won't want a dog that sheds a lot that you'll have to invest a lot of time brushing...and cleaning your home.
Space: If your home is tiny, you probably don't want a huge dog.
Lifestyle: If you're fairly active, you may want a dog who can hike with you.
Also, just to be on the safe side, check with your local government to find out if they have any rules and requirements when it comes to dog choice and ownership...and also to secure information about licenses and permits.
Budget: There are lots of expenses that go with having a dog. Know what they are and be sure you can afford those costs...the initial costs, and the monthly costs for the dog's lifetime.
I would begin by looking at those five categories, coming up with what description of each matches your life, and then begin researching dogs that would fit in well with this criteria.
2. Be sure you're "all in." Be absolutely, positively sure you're willing to commit to everything that's part of being a responsible dog owner. Be sure you have the finances to support this new family member, that you are willing to handle his or her medical and grooming needs, that you have the time to train them...or the means to have a professional train them for you, and that you have
the desire to provide a whole lot of love.
3. Determine where you'll secure your pet. Some folks go to the local Humane Society and find the perfect pet there. Others use
breeders.
If you're choosing a breeder, this takes some research in itself. You can ask a veterinarian or a friend for a good reference. Visit the breeder...this person
should be proud to show you their home and their kennel. Things to look for: a) a well-maintained environment, b) odorless kennels, and c) large exercise areas for their dogs.
The breeder
should be very knowledgeable about the dogs they're raising and be available to answer questions AFTER the sale of the dog. They should also provide a written contract, guarantee of health, documentation of pedigree, and registration papers made out in your name.
4. Prep for ownership: You may need to dog-proof your home for your pet's safety...and so your rugs, furniture, etc. don't end up damaged. You'll also need water bowls, a collar, a leash, toys, food...maybe even a fence for your backyard...just to name a few initial purchases.
You'll also need a good veterinarian in your area. To begin to research this, I would ask your neighbors who they use and why. Some folks microchip their pets as well.
5. Make a list of everything you can think of that applies to you and simply begin working on each, one by one. Keep all of your paperwork together...ideas, answers to questions, contact information, etc. I suggest a 3-ring binder, with tabs for each category, to keep your research
organized.
In doing so, you'll have done your homework which should help ensure a wonderful new furry friend...and a smooth transition to having this new family member in your
life.
I hope this helps...and would love to see a photo of you with your new companion if you decide to proceed!
