Whether working at the office or home, sometimes we
seem to hit a wall, and it gets hard to get a project or job done. This does not just happen for a job for which you are being paid. You may have a project at home that you are struggling with. These things happen.
But sometimes, you do not have much time to get out of the slump and complete a project. What can you do then to get back on track?
1. Talk to a colleague. A few minutes with a colleague often helps us gain perspective and get back on
track.
2. Make a list of what needs to be done and prioritize the items on it.
3. Plan your day. A schedule will add structure, which often helps. Schedule work periods (close your door to discourage interruptions). Take a break to stretch when you feel your energy evaporating. Schedule a different time to check email and return calls.
4. Turn off distractions. Set your phone to silent if possible. Close your email program while you work. Avoid social media and other internet time wasters.
5. Take one small step. Write a paragraph. Begin to balance that account.
Remember the saying, "The longest journey begins with a single step." Take that step.
6. Revisit your project from the beginning. Can you see the enterprise with fresh eyes? What is the goal? What needs to be done? Sometimes you have to start again from a different angle, but then
it flows.
7. Review what you have accomplished so far. What is the next step? Break the rest of the job into smaller parts to achieve, making it less daunting.
8. Take a short break. Go for a walk. Avoid thinking about the problem; focus on being present in the moment.
9. How are you feeling, really? Maybe you are dehydrated, which can make you
feel sluggish and dull. Maybe hunger is making it hard to concentrate. Try some fruit or something with protein. If you are feeling stressed about something to the point you can't focus, is there someone you can talk it over with?
10. Freshen up your workspace. If it is cluttered,
take five minutes and clear it. Add something positive, like flowers or a motivational quote, where you will see it.
11. Play some tunes. If you like and can have
music while you work, create a playlist to energize you.
12. Wear something that makes you feel good. If you work at home, trade your PJs or sweats for a nice pair of jeans or a casual skirt with a favorite tee.
13. Promise yourself a reward if this is something that motivates you...an ice cream cone, a new magazine, or a book. Something to look forward to.
14. Think about your past accomplishments. We often achieve a goal and move right along to what is next on our list, scarcely acknowledging what we have done. Take a few minutes and think back on your successes. Enjoy that sense of pride and let it encourage you. You've got this!
